Physiology Testing

Use science and data to optimize your performance

Working with Kevin has been transformative for my running. His expertise in blood lactate testing and training is exceptional, and he takes the time to explain the science in a way that is both clear and empowering. Every session and training adjustment feels purposeful and tailored specifically to me.

What really sets Kevin apart is not just his knowledge, but how he applies it. His ability to translate the data into training zones has completely changed how I train and race. I’ve achieved personal records in every event I compete in—from the 1500m all the way up to the marathon.

Beyond his technical skill, Kevin brings a warm, encouraging demeanor and a genuine enthusiasm for helping athletes succeed. He truly cares about each athlete—I leave sessions feeling motivated, confident, and excited about the process.

I cannot recommend Kevin enough for anyone serious about improving their performance.

Lactate Testing

Lactate testing helps remove guesswork and ego from your training — are you performing the correct intensity during your workouts? Are you showing up to your local track workout and simply running as fast as you can for a given workout?

Answer those questions and establish accurate training zones using blood lactate testing. During the test, you will FEEL what zone 2 feels like, what anaerobic threshold feels like — you will get real time feedback about your physiology at various paces, heart rates, and RPEs (rating of perceived exertion).

Typical tests are 50-70 minutes long and entail a gradual ramp in intensity, with your first stage being very easy and the last stage being above anaerobic threshold and fairly challenging. It is not a maximal or exhaustive test.

Tests can be customized. For example, you can perform a workout (i.e. 6×1 mile) with blood samples taken after intervals to fine tune your execution and pacing of the workout.

Available at APEX PWR as a running (treadmill) or cycling (using your own bike with a smart trainer) test. Book the VO2max+Consult or Bike VO2max option to work with me. You may call Apex PWR to confirm your test is with me.

VO2max tests take 20-30 minutes including warm up. They are maximal/exhaustive, beginning at a low effort and progressing each minute until you cannot run/bike any longer.

Bike tests require you bring your own bike compatible with a smart trainer (Wahoo Kickr). Most modern road, mountain, and hybrid bikes will work. If you are not sure if your bike is compatible, email me a picture of your bike and I will let you know.

I had an incredible experience working with Kevin for a lactate treadmill test. He was knowledgeable, professional, and made the entire process feel approachable and even enjoyable.

The insights I gained about my training zones, performance (and a few bonus running form/technique tips) were extremely valuable, and everything was explained in a way that was easy to understand and apply.

I left feeling more confident and excited about my training than ever. I would highly recommend Kevin to any athlete looking to take their performance to the next level!

FAQs

Lactate is a product of anaerobic energy production (glycolysis). It is commonly blamed for fatigue or soreness, but this is fitness myth that has existed for too long. Instead, it serves important functions, such as buffering acidity in the blood and being a fuel source. While lactate does not cause fatigue, it is correlated with the production of fatigue-causing agents (i.e. hydrogen ions). Measuring lactate can inform us about metabolic stresses during exercise.

What is lactate?

VO2max, measured in ml O2/min/kg, is the maximum amount of oxygen you can use during exercise. It is limited primarily by cardiac output, or how much blood (thus oxygen) your heart can pump. A higher VO2max indicates better cardiovascular fitness and is correlated with improved endurance performance and a longer lifespan.

What is vo2max?

Who are these tests for?

Lactate testing is for anyone looking to optimize their endurance training and performance. You will need to bike or run continuously for 50+ minutes. This is not intended for individuals who have no prior running experience. However, you do not need to be an elite athlete to benefit from testing. A lactate test is NOT a maximal effort.

VO2max testing is for anyone looking to track their cardiovascular fitness. VO2max testing generally requires a maximal effort. Submaximal test options exist but can be less accurate.

You should be cleared to perform high intensity exercise for either test.

Which test should i get?

If you’re looking to optimize your training and identify training zones, choose the lactate test. If you’re looking to find out your VO2max, choose the VO2max test.

Can i use an HSA for testing?

Yes!

Should i be fasted for testing?

No. Please come fueled as you usually would be for a high intensity workout.

Where are you located?

Lactate testing is available at my home gym in Tualatin, OR. I work with athletes across the Portland metro area: Lake Oswego, Tualatin, West Linn, Beaverton, Portland, Oregon City, Hillsboro with some driving from Salem and Corvallis as well.

VO2max testing is available in Tigard at APEX PWR. See the VO2max testing section at the middle of the page for details.
